How it works

The calculator first projects what your current savings will be worth at the deadline at the return you enter. The remaining gap is spread across equal monthly deposits, counting the interest each deposit will earn.

A quick example

To reach $10,000 in 3 years starting from zero in a high-yield savings account paying 4% APY, you need to save about $262 a month. With no interest it would be $278.

What to use it for

It works for a down payment, an emergency fund, a car or a vacation. For goals only a few years away, use a conservative return such as a savings account or CD rate rather than a stock market average.

Frequently asked questions

What return should I enter?

Use a rate that matches where the money will sit. For short-term goals, use your savings account APY; enter 0 to ignore interest.

Does it account for inflation?

No. For a goal many years away, consider raising the target to allow for higher prices.

How big should an emergency fund be?

The usual guideline is three to six months of essential expenses.
