Result

What comes out of your paycheck

Your employer withholds federal income tax, FICA taxes (6.2% for Social Security on wages up to $184,500 in 2026, and 1.45% for Medicare on all wages, plus 0.9% above $200,000), state and sometimes local income tax, and any deductions you choose, such as 401(k) contributions or health insurance premiums.

How the federal estimate works

The calculator subtracts your pre-tax 401(k) contribution and the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly), applies the 2026 federal tax brackets from 10% to 37%, and subtracts the $2,200 child tax credit for each child under 17. The annual result is divided across your pay periods.

A quick example

A single filer earning $65,000 a year, paid biweekly, contributing 5% to a 401(k) and paying about 4% in state tax, takes home roughly $1,888 per paycheck. Federal income tax is about $201, Social Security $155, Medicare $36 and state tax $95 per check.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my actual paycheck different?

Real withholding depends on your W-4, the exact state and local rules, and deductions such as health insurance, HSA or FSA contributions. Treat this as an estimate and compare it with your pay stub.

How do I find my state income tax rate?

Rates vary widely. Nine states, including Texas and Florida, have no tax on wages, while others use flat or progressive rates. Enter an average effective rate for your state, or 0 if your state has no income tax.

Does this include the new deductions for tips and overtime?

No. The temporary federal deductions for qualified tips and overtime pay are claimed on your tax return and are not included in this estimate.
