How the amount financed is calculated
The calculator adds sales tax to the vehicle price, then subtracts your down payment and trade-in. In most states sales tax is charged on the price after the trade-in credit, which is how it is calculated here; a few states tax the full price.
A quick example
A $35,000 car with $5,000 down, 6% sales tax and a 7% APR over 60 months means financing $32,100, for a payment of about $636 a month and roughly $6,037 in interest.
Term length and total cost
Stretching a loan to 72 or 84 months lowers the payment but raises total interest and increases the chance of owing more than the car is worth. Compare the total cost, not just the monthly figure.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include title, registration and dealer fees?
No. Add them to the vehicle price if you plan to roll them into the loan.
How much should I put down?
A common guideline is 20% on a new car and 10% on a used one, which helps you avoid being upside down on the loan.
What APR will I get?
It depends mainly on your credit score, the loan term and whether the car is new or used. Getting preapproved by a bank or credit union gives you a rate to compare with the dealer’s offer.
