How hours are calculated

The calculator subtracts your clock-in time from your clock-out time and takes off the unpaid break. If you clock out earlier than you clock in, the shift is treated as ending the next day. Daily hours are multiplied by the days you work each week.

How overtime works

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. This calculator applies that rule. Some states, such as California, also require daily overtime, which is not included here.

A quick example

Working 9:00 to 5:30 with a 30-minute unpaid lunch is 8 hours a day, or 40 hours across five days. At $20 an hour, that is $800 a week before taxes.

Frequently asked questions

Are lunch breaks paid?

Federal law does not require paid meal breaks. Meal periods of about 30 minutes or more are generally unpaid if you are fully relieved of duties, while short rest breaks are usually paid.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. Eight hours and 15 minutes is 8.25 hours.

Who is exempt from overtime?

Many salaried executive, administrative and professional employees are exempt if they meet federal salary and duties tests. Check with your employer or your state labor office.
