Percentage Calculator

Solve the three most common percentage problems: a percentage of a number, what percent one number is of another, and the percent change between two values.

The three formulas

A% of B is A × B / 100. What percent A is of B is A / B × 100. Percent change from A to B is (B − A) / A × 100: a positive result is an increase and a negative one is a decrease.

Examples

20% of 150 is 30. The number 30 is 20% of 150. If a price goes from 150 to 180 it rose 20%; going from 180 back to 150 is a 16.67% drop, because the starting value is different.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn’t a 20% increase followed by a 20% decrease get me back to the start?

Because the second percentage applies to a different amount. 100 plus 20% is 120, and 120 minus 20% is 96.

How do I find the original price before an increase?

Divide the final price by 1 plus the percentage as a decimal. If it costs 110 after a 10% increase, the original was 110 / 1.10 = 100.

What is the difference between percentage points and percent?

If a rate goes from 2% to 3%, it rose one percentage point, but in relative terms it increased 50%.
