How it is calculated
Tip = bill × tip percentage. The total is then divided by the number of people. On an $80 bill, an 18% tip is $14.40, making $94.40 in total, or $47.20 each for two people.
How much to tip in the US
At sit-down restaurants, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is customary, with 20% or more for excellent service. Tipping less is usual for counter service or takeout. Check the bill for an automatic gratuity, which is often added for larger groups.
